The D100CD20 is a programmable controller, manufactured by Cutler Hammer. It is part of a modular system, which designed to create a programmable controller system. Aside from the D100CD20, the other basic building block for the system is an expander. The D100CD20 is a 20 I/O controller with 8 outputs and 12 inputs. It comes with a built-in PROM writer feature, along with a high-speed counter, and it has a 40 I/O capacity, which can be reached with the help of an I/O expander.
Similarly to other controllers, the D100CD20 is a stand-alone programmable logic controller; this module is one of the most important elements of a system since it connects to the power line as well as to the inputs and outputs that require the system to operate. The program for this controller is entered by placing a pre-programmed PROM into the controller. Another option is to use a hand-held programmer to enter the program. The D100CD20 can also connect to a computer, so that the program may be entered via the keyboard. Programmable Read Only Memory (or PROM) modules are devices that store programs. This PROM feature serves as a backup for the D100CD20’s program, allowing the operator to retrieve the program in case of accidental loss. Using a PROM also allows the operator to repeat a program in different machine tools, in order to perform the same applications. Additionally, the D100CD20 has analog capabilities; an analog input module should be connected prior to the expanders, although it doesn’t affect module’s capabilities when the controller is expanded. Keep in mind that only a single analog module can be used per system.
